Hardscaping built for Hudson Valley conditions

Orange County is hard on outdoor stonework. Our soil holds water, our winters run through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles, and the grade on most properties around Cornwall and Mountainville means water is always heading somewhere. A retaining wall or patio that was installed without accounting for that will tell on itself within a few seasons: leaning walls, heaved pavers, settled corners.

We build the parts you can’t see as carefully as the parts you can: proper base depth, compacted in lifts, gravel backfill, and drainage designed to move water away from the structure rather than trap it behind.

What we build

  • Retaining walls: structural and decorative, from garden walls to multi-tier walls handling real grade change
  • Walkways and paths: natural stone, paver, and stone step installations
  • Stonework: steps, veneer, fire features, and sitting walls
  • Drainage work: French drains, downspout runoff management, and grading that protects both your hardscape and your foundation

How we quote it

We’ll be in touch to set up a time for Ryan to walk the property with you. You get a written quote for exactly the scope discussed, not a range, and not a number that grows once work starts. If we think what you’re asking for won’t hold up, we’ll say so before you spend the money.

Hardscaping questions we get

How long does a retaining wall take to build?

Most residential retaining walls take two to five working days depending on length, height, and site access. Walls that require excavation or drainage work behind them take longer. We give you a firm timeline with your quote, not an estimate that moves.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Orange County?

It depends on the height and your town's code: many municipalities require a permit above four feet, and some require engineering drawings. We handle permitting as part of the job rather than leaving it to you, and we'll tell you up front if your project needs one.

Why do retaining walls fail around here?

Almost always drainage. Hudson Valley soil holds water, and freeze-thaw cycles push against any wall that traps it. We build with proper base depth, gravel backfill, and drainage behind the wall so water moves through instead of shoving the wall forward over a few winters.

Can you repair an existing wall instead of replacing it?

Sometimes. If the base and drainage are sound and the issue is cosmetic or limited to a section, repair makes sense. If the wall is leaning because it was built without drainage, repair is usually money spent twice. We'll tell you honestly which situation you're in.

What our customers say

"We just had work done by Krafft's Lawn and Landscape. It was a fairly big job, and we were thrilled with the results. When we called, Ryan came out within 24 hours and did a thorough inspection of the site. He listened intently to what we wanted to do and actually heard us. He then gave us a quote for exactly what we needed, at a very fair price. The work they did was thorough and exact, and when they were done, the clean-up was the best we've ever had. They treated our yard like it was their own. Overall, a perfect job, a fair price, with responsive and honest people. They'll be our first choice when we need more work done."

"What a great experience all around!! We had a ~100 ft run of not-so-easy-to-replace fence to replace, rocky space, thru a tree, and dodging limby shrubs, with elevation change. They took care of the permitting for us! and they did a super clean demo and haul away. Setting the new fencing was truly impressive to watch, they took great pains to make sure each section was square, plumb, and level. Really nice work! We love it! We will never hesitate to work with Ryan & Co. again!! Highly recommended!"

"Ryan and the Krafft team did structural and landscaping work for us to mitigate leaking into our basement from torrential rains. The foundation, yard, and sidewalk work they did was top-notch. Bottom line: great work, great price, and great people. They are trustworthy and I'll work with them again for our next project."
