The wall you see is the smallest part of the job

Drive around Orange County and start noticing retaining walls. A lot of the newer block walls are leaning, bulging in the middle, or tipping at the top. The century-old dry-stacked field stone next to them is fine.

The difference isn’t the material. It’s water.

A wall holds back soil, soil holds water, and when that water can’t escape it does two things: it makes the soil dramatically heavier than the wall was built for, and then it freezes and expands straight out through the wall. We run dozens of freeze-thaw cycles in a Hudson Valley winter. Each one moves the wall a little further.

What we build into every wall

  • Base excavated to the depth the soil requires, compacted in lifts rather than dumped and raked level
  • Clean crushed-stone backfill behind the block, so water has somewhere to go that isn’t your wall
  • Perforated drain pipe sloped to daylight, actually carrying water off the site instead of relocating it
  • Geogrid reinforcement on taller walls and heavier loads
  • Permitting handled where your town requires it

What we build them for

Around Cornwall, Highland Falls, and Monroe, most walls are doing genuine structural work, carving flat usable space out of hillside, or holding a driveway cut. In flatter parts of the county they’re more often creating terraced planting beds or defining a patio edge. Both get the same base and drainage treatment; there’s no version of this where skipping it is fine.

Comparing quotes

When one retaining wall quote comes in meaningfully lower, the gap is almost never in the block. It’s in excavation depth, drainage, and backfill: the work nobody can see once the job is done, and the only place there’s real money to cut.

Worth asking any contractor directly: how deep is the base, what’s going behind the wall, and where does the drain daylight? Anyone who builds walls properly will answer fast and specifically.

Retaining Walls questions we get

How much does a retaining wall cost in Orange County?

Height and length matter less than what's behind them. A four-foot wall on an accessible site with simple drainage is a very different job from the same wall on a slope with poor access and water coming from uphill. We quote after walking the site, in writing, for the actual scope.

How tall can a retaining wall be without engineering?

Many Orange County municipalities require engineered drawings above four feet, though thresholds vary by town and by what the wall is holding back. We check your town's requirement before quoting and handle the permitting if it's needed.

How long does a retaining wall take?

Most residential walls run two to five working days. Walls needing excavation, drainage installation, or geogrid reinforcement take longer. You get a firm timeline with the quote.

My wall is leaning. Can it be fixed?

Depends on why. If one section shifted but the base and drainage are sound, a partial rebuild works. If it's leaning because there's no drainage behind it, repairing the visible part is paying twice. The cause is still there. We'll tell you which one you have.

What's geogrid and do I need it?

Geogrid is reinforcement that extends back into the soil in layers, tying the wall and the hillside together so they act as one mass. Taller walls and walls holding significant load need it. It's invisible in the finished product, which is exactly why it's the first thing cut from a cheap quote.

What our customers say

"We just had work done by Krafft's Lawn and Landscape. It was a fairly big job, and we were thrilled with the results. When we called, Ryan came out within 24 hours and did a thorough inspection of the site. He listened intently to what we wanted to do and actually heard us. He then gave us a quote for exactly what we needed, at a very fair price. The work they did was thorough and exact, and when they were done, the clean-up was the best we've ever had. They treated our yard like it was their own. Overall, a perfect job, a fair price, with responsive and honest people. They'll be our first choice when we need more work done."

"What a great experience all around!! We had a ~100 ft run of not-so-easy-to-replace fence to replace, rocky space, thru a tree, and dodging limby shrubs, with elevation change. They took care of the permitting for us! and they did a super clean demo and haul away. Setting the new fencing was truly impressive to watch, they took great pains to make sure each section was square, plumb, and level. Really nice work! We love it! We will never hesitate to work with Ryan & Co. again!! Highly recommended!"

"Ryan and the Krafft team did structural and landscaping work for us to mitigate leaking into our basement from torrential rains. The foundation, yard, and sidewalk work they did was top-notch. Bottom line: great work, great price, and great people. They are trustworthy and I'll work with them again for our next project."
